As part of her series GRAFT, Edra Soto presents her work in a nostalgic manner. The artist applies a “rejas” design of octagons and squares, from the decorative screens used in the mid-20th-century Puerto Rican architecture. Due to its size, its location and material, this work invites visitors to analyze the structure from a distance. Inspired by the architecture of lower- and middle-class homes, Casa-Isla suggests the topography of Puerto Rico and the notion of a home as a vessel. In this context, the artwork becomes a reflection on states of isolation and the idea of homes as topographical spaces that contain private histories. Placed over water and illuminated, the artwork connects with the public through its luminous reflection.
