Graft | ICA San Diego
Graft, 2023
For more than a decade, Soto’s Grafts have reimagined the geometrically patterned rejas and quiebrasoles of Puerto Rican homes, transplanting these architectural forms into new landscapes. In doing so, she creates poetic meditations on identity, displacement, and belonging—structures that, like the word “graft” suggests, take root and grow anew in unfamiliar ground.
The project reflects on migration, memory, and belonging — honoring working-class communities and the narratives often pushed into the background. Early iterations were built with imperfect materials and limited means, echoing the realities of the communities it uplifts.
